Often times when we first listen to a new artist, we get that feeling of excitement. You know, that amazing moment where you feel like you’re the only one that knows the band or artist exists. Being from Massachusetts, I'm sure you can imagine that I have this feeling quite often! For years I've followed artists whose names would result in blank stares or a "never heard of 'em." As impressive as being entrenched in the world of Texas Country and Red Dirt is from Massachusetts, it's still pales in comparison to the family and friends of a new band. I'm talking about the early days where gigs often aren't paid and seats aren't always full. Those friends and family members are the crucial support circle for a new artist. Full time jobs are the priority to keep food on the table and bills paid. Aka, reality vs musician hobby. Texas new-comers, The Shane Watson Band have been starting to receive some deserved recognition and radio air time the past few weeks, and I'm happy to share my thoughts after coming across them recently.
New bands are where my heart is with Texas Music because I am they type of person that thrives on trying to help others. There is nothing like hearing a new band, soaking up their music and working to share it with others. I stumbled across Shane Watson's band a couple weeks back and noticed they have a new single out to radio, Missin' You. It didn't take to long for me to get hooked on their warm Texas Country sound. Shane kindly shared the band's story and the inspiration behind their latest single Missin' You.
Originally started in Cleburne, Texas, Shane and the boys have been together less than two years. They kept it pretty small for around a year and then realized that if they were going to be serious about their music, they had to start traveling. There is only so far that a band can get before the infamous "leap of faith." Being fathers and husbands means that there are some high stakes when taking an endeavor like this. Despite those responsibilities, is playing it safe worth a lifelong bout of regret what "what-ifs"? Shane and the guys weren’t about to find out as they have been out touring and working relentlessly to make a name for themselves.
Shane is writer for the band so everything from their 2015 EP Lucky Enough, to their latest work is all penned by the lead man himself. Their latest single Missin’ You is the song I believe will put their name on the map. Watson told me that his wife had gone out with some girlfriends one night, leaving him to look after their young daughter. After being with you’re partner in crime all the time, it’s understandable to feel a bit lonely when you find yourself at home and your little one is asleep in bed.
Shane decided to pull out a bottle of rum and go relax in his truck for a while. Glazing out into the clear Texas night sky, he started to craft the lyrics of Missin’ You and it just came together naturally. Despite no serious intentions of recording it, he mentioned it in passing at a sound check. The band immediately fell in love with the song, added their Texas Country magic and now it has been receiving plays at six different radio stations - and counting.
Keep your eye out for the Shane Watson Band, I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a good deal from them as their single makes the rounds.
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
