It's not always easy being an independent country music fan when it comes to attending concerts. Typically they are in the city and that leads to a pretty expensive trip.
I have thankfully attended a few shows this year for some of my favorite artists, but as I explain below, it becomes an expensive ordeal. Other parts of the country have incredible access to cheaper concerts and local venues. Based on what I have experienced for a lack of venue options around here, I do believe that there is a large opportunity to spread Texas music. See, I think it's a form of music that many people would actually like. There is such a large portion of the population that are followers and can only like something if others tell them it's OK. I think back to the lack of interest people would show when I recommended bands. They can't like stuff if someone doesn't reassure them that it's cool. That's pretty sad really, but it leaves the door open for people like me to keep pushing and spread the good word about what we love so much.
When I see the insane amount of shows that go on in Texas and the surrounding states, it's pretty amazing. Boston, like many cities is a pain in the ass to get into. The traffic is awful, and it requires quite a bit of planning to attend a show or event during the week. There's nearly no parking in the city anyways. Most people have jobs the next morning so getting home late and having to wake-up early is a reason why I hate Boston shows. When Toby Keith's bar does a show like Granger Smith in December, I went. You get out around 11 PM or so and back by midnight-12:30 AM. That's late when you have to get up the next day, but considering it's only a town over from me, a ton of us did it without complaint. What needs to happen is better access to these shows. It's beyond frustrating and if an artist sees this post, I would love some insight on how to help. Suburbs are way more accessible and when you see how packed Toby's is for a concert, it's impressive. Venues like that are central enough and at major highways like Route 1, Interstate 495 and 95 and a much better location overall.
The goal is to help get good artists up here. Input and advice is welcomed on how to realistically do it.
Here's the link to Toby's so you can see the venue.
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
