Social media continues to be a powerful tool for me to keep adding artists and bands to my list to share. Bart Rose of Fort Worth Sound had recently posted a video of Kensie Coppin singing on a track for Bryce Dicus and the Mercenaries. I love Kensie’s music so I figured I’d check out Bryce’s as it must be good to have Kensie singing on it. I was not disappointed when I pulled them up on Spotify.
I took a listen to their 2015 release, “The Road & The Radio” and you can hear how they are still a young band. I would liken them to Brantley Gilbert’s first album - which is a compliment if you’ve heard it. While the production is not on the level of some of the bigger acts, we must realize that a band has to start putting together quality material to build a base. As that grows, they can afford to have the fancier recording studios, polish etc. This is just like Gilbert’s first album in that regard and it makes it all the more important to put out quality material - which they did.
I found “Lonely’s What’s Holding Me” to be one of the highlight songs on the album for me. The relationship is over and he is trying to get her off his mind but is failing to. Hearing the way this song is executed really made it easy to relate to. While it has a slight build towards the end, it has a softness to it that keeps that tender, raw feeling. The acoustic guitar is prominent with hints of the electric poking through that times. It just fit the mood very well and I enjoyed it a lot.
The title track, “The Road & The Radio” is another top choice of mine off their album. It’s about heading out on the road for their gigs and his appreciation for his woman to be so supportive. I look at how many of these artists have partners that stand by their men and women and it’s a tough thing to do. It’s easy for a working couple to scoff at it, but there are so many sacrifices that must be made when one decides to tour. It’s all part of the decision to follow a profession like this, but it doesn’t make it easy. Make sure to check these guys out and I look forward to their latest work in the pipeline!
