Here in New England, it can be sometimes alienating unless you are with like minded music folks due to the varying tastes. Those I’ve begun to meet through my love and sharing of country music, slowly become a community because we are all kind of “in it together” so to speak. We all have that appreciation for some fiddle and pedal steel. Each of us has our guilty pleasures, but the ‘twangy country and southern rock is my go-to when I define real solid country music. One of the impressive things about independent country is all of the young artists that feel the same way and know how to offer a good country song at a relatively young age. Hunter Hutchinson has been on my radar since the end of last year and is someone I look to with promise and hope. With a new album on the horizon, this week we got out first look at what this both recently engaged AND Texas Tech Grad has in store for us. (congrats man!)
Titled Summer Love Song, this is a catchy tune that chronicles the romanticized story of a summer fling. That kind of magical relationship that has so much sparks it requires a darker shade of the ole’ sunglasses. Like anything of that nature, it slowly fizzles out by the end of the summer once the dust settles. Like myself, you may note the similarities to a good lively Jon Wolfe tune - especially with his infectious deep voice.
While this song is not particularly deep, it’s Hunter’s style that continues to keep me as a fan. There is steel guitar throughout this entire track along with that wonderful Texas Country upbeat sound. There is even a touch of organ in there! A lot of my appreciation with these artists is not that they are the next Mark Twain in every song, but rather their continued support of country music values. It’s artists like Hunter that will be slowly taking the torch to continue to grow the Texas music boundaries; and as we’ve seen the past few years, it’s going to be just fine. There’s also the energy and stage presence that these young-guns seem to exude. You know, because they are passionate as hell about their craft.
If you are unfamiliar with Hunter’s work but a fan of Aaron Watson and Jon Wolfe, he’s right up your alley. That is how I came across his last album What Do You Say? in 2016 and became hooked. All I can say is hurry up with the release Hunter, can’t wait to hear it!
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
