While some out there have looked down up Josh Abbott's music over the years, I've been a pretty loyal follower to his music. Some artists in the Texas Music scene have been criticized as being "bro-country" or just hokey in general. Josh Abbott, Casey Donahew and Kyle Park have been accused of hiding being their Texas roots just to put out the style of music they do. Like any artist that is out there, light-hearted and drinking songs are typically cut and I have no issues with that whatsoever. Music is meant to be enjoyed and sometimes we want something light and fun. From what I have heard lately, it sounds like The Josh Abbott Band has worked on a more mature sound for this latest album, Until My Voice Goes Out.
I have enjoyed many of their songs over the years like Road Trippin', Oh, Tonight (featuring Kacey Musgraves), She's Like Texas - the list goes on and on. Their latest tune Texas Women, Tennessee Women has a different sound to it that even incorporates some raging horns. I haven't heard anything like it from them before and man do I love it.
It has that Sturgill Simpson make-up now with the brass instruments which works to create an incredibly full sound. Josh's instantly recognizable voice sounds excellent on here as well. I have to hand it to him for trying this style of music and not turning towards a more mainstream sound as others have done. This song is actually quite the opposite with it's jazzy twangy' vibe.
So what do I expect? Yeah I have a gut feeling this latest album is going to be superb. It sounds like it will be something different than we’ve heard from JAB before, and I'm happy about that. It's pre-ordered and I'm looking forward to getting my signed gear.
You can Pre-order the album HERE and see the different options JAB has available.
