In the world of country music and especially Texas country music, we are used to hearing many of our favorite artists play with a full band on their records. Since becoming more familiar with the up and coming acts, I have realized that most do not always have opportunities to play full band at their shows. There are times where they are able to have the full ensemble, but many shows throughout the week are spent playing solo or song swaps. What I have learned is the true talent is not necessarily what lies behind the album, but their live performances. It's easy to be swept up in a full studio recording, complete with a large range of instruments and an expert at the helm of the soundboard. Kentucky based Jericho Woods, who I covered last month, kindly reach out to me with for a sneak peak at their upcoming acoustic release. This is the type of music that really shows off just what these guys are capable of.
Reminiscent of fellow Kentuckians, Sundy Best, acoustic guitars, a Cajon, fiddle, and those ever-so-smooth vocals, are the main attraction here on Bonfire Songs. This five song EP is the perfect companion to a warm summer night – just bring your beverage of choice. I'll take a Shiner Strawberry Blonde if you're heading to the store...
Putting together a release like this I imagine being a gamble because not everyone loves the acoustic flavor. It's not always the type of music that fits every situation and I find it best to enjoy while relaxing in order to savor each song. Is there enough depth and passion in the vocals to make up for the leaner instrumentals? Is there enough variation so each song doesn't sound like it rolls into the next?
Yes. Yes. And Yes.
The boys of Jericho Woods got it right. I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this release which they have said is influenced by family and friends – giving it a special personal feel.
There are some intimate moments such as Gonna Be Alright where a man goes from lover, to father, to ultimately a dad giving his daughter's hand away in marriage. Life as we know it rockets by at a blistering pace and many of us spend so much time worrying about the small stuff. It's a great reminder how life has a way of working out and having a little faith can make some incredible things happen. You'll hear the nervousness about asking for her hand in marriage to the same concern of giving his own daughter's hand away. Each time he is told how everything is gonna be all right. The circle of life my friends.
The standout track for me on this album is Weep No More with it's warm attachments to home and family. It's hard not to want to see so much of the world and different places we may seek in life, but family is always home. It's those with young children that understand how a family becomes the rock in one's life. The special messages from your kids how they miss you and hope to see you soon. No matter where your life or job takes you, there's nothing like coming home.
