In the current state of our world, we as Americans need to take the time to reflect upon what our country stands for. Terrorist attacks have been bombarding us in the news, innocent people are being killed, and for what? Someone or some group's sick pleasure? Regardless of your political beliefs, it's times like these that we need to be grateful for our freedom and realize that thousands have laid their lives down for us. I am able to sit here, drinking a nice cold Shiner Bock and type on the deck because some brave, patriotic souls stood up for that right. Aaron Lewis' latest song, Folded Flag, is a heart wrenching reminder of what the ultimate sacrifice entails.
Aaron delivers this powerful song that takes it's perspective from a letter being read by the fallen soldier's spouse. He had written this letter in the unfortunate event that he was killed, much like the tear jerker, If You're Reading This by Tim McGraw. Written by a talented crew of, Marty Morgan, Yasmine Van Wilt, and Luc Nyhus, Fold Flag's somber vocals and basic country instrumentation naturally create an emphasis on the lyrics. You aren't listening for a guitar solo to break out, rather you are focusing on the devastating news that this now widower has received. Her hands likely trembling as she's reading the last written words she has of her man.
This song made me think back to Carryn Owens during President Trump's speech in February. If you had dry eyes after that standing ovation, you have no heart. That was such a real moment we often fail to witness. She could not even control herself and how could she? Imagine being in her shoes and being left to raise a family on your own. It's a reality I would never wish on anyone and this song, like CarrynOwens story, is a powerful reminder of the freedom that we far to often take for granted.
Give a listen to Folded Flag and remember our troops and those that have fallen.
