I have to give some credit to a great guy and talented artist, Jeremy Steding (his new album “Odessa” is out now!) for turning me onto Aaron McDonnell. The first thing I noticed right away is the powerful and deep voice that McDonnell has. I gave a listen to the five songs on “Get Gone” and was hooked pretty quickly. I was stunned I had not heard of him prior.
He gets things rolling right away with the track “A Cold One” and it is filled with the fantastic instrumentation of those like Cody Jinks, Sturgill Simpson etc. He really turns on the country in this song. It’s certainly a song that will catch the ear of a listener and make them an instant fan of his music.
I am in love with the title track, “Get Gone” which is a strong showing of an artist committed to preserving that “new-old” country sound. The relationship has ended in this song, but it is not a nasty break-up. He acknowledges that his partner’s heart has been “Stepped on” and is gentle about it. It’s rather accepting that it is over and it’s time to move on to the future. It’s pretty refreshing when you think about how many songs end up with drowning sorrows in a bar.
“I’m Broke” follows the wonderful classic country sound perfectly. It just sounds so perfect with his voice and the overall presentation. Some of the mainstream acts should hear how he does some talking in the song and does it just like the big guns from the past. This song just screams classic country and I found myself repeating it quite a bit.
I want to thank Jeremy Steding again for putting Aaron McDonnell on my radar as this is a very talented artist. There are a lot of hungry ears for the classic country sound and I am one of them. Give him a listen and while you’re at it, check out Jeremy’s work as well!
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
