Having stumbled across the Scooter Brown Band some five or six years ago, I spent many days in my college job cranking their music to get me through shifts. Their southern rock sound has taken a heavier sound in recent years from what initially drew me in, but they’ve been coming into their own as time passes. Their 2009 album Between Hell and Texas was more twangy country rock than the latest distorted guitar driven tunes. Hearing the announcement of their latest song, American Son prompted me to fire it up and take it for a spin.
Scooter has been touring with bands like the Marshall Tucker Band and the Charlie Daniels Band the past few months. So naturally, it’s only fitting that country legend Daniels joins Brown for American Son. Both are unapologetically patriotic and are pro Red White and Blue. Scott "Scooter" Brown also served in our armed forces as a Marine (thank you for your service!).
This song is a tribute to those that are the backbone our country and not afraid to stand-up to protect our great nation. In an age where it feels like we have an increasingly alarming number of internal threats that continue to cripple our country, Daniels and Brown pay homage to those that will fight. This country is not a given in our world. We are constantly under threats from terrorists and organizations that hate the freedom that we so proudly boast. It seems that as of late, regardless of political views, many of us have lost sight of that. This freedom comes at a cost. The soldiers on the front line protecting us and fail to cower at the threat of death.
Give a listen to their acoustic performance of American Son
We have people that refuse to stand up during the Pledge of Allegiance at school for goodness sake. I will not mix politics in this, but we as a nation, need to do some soul searching. It’s not a left versus right thing. It’s a look at ourselves and what our founding father’s intended this country to stand for. Are we doing the best job we can? Are we working towards unity, or stark division? Brown recites The Pledge in this song and soon after Daniels takes a moment to praise the hard working people in our communities that will turn to fight if threatened. Tell me the last time you heard something like this?
With it’s classic deep southern rock sound, American Son is going to resonate with a large portion of our population right now. It’s that defiant fist in the air, daring anyone to come and take it. We’d like to see you try.
Their new album, American Son will be released September 2017!
