My love for country music can be traced back to a few artists, and standing tall at the gateway is Alan Jackson. If there is an artist that I can say had the largest impact on my listening, it’s this man. All of those wonderful years I had, enjoying his songs on mainstream radio seem like a sad, distant memory. If only that could happen again so people today could understand the caliber of his music and the impact he made on the industry. It’s his latest single, The Older I Get that really hit me and the video that accompanies it will have any true AJ fan feeling all sorts of emotions.
With Alan Jackson now inducted into the country music Hall of Fame, it’s hard to imagine Jackson being anything but a star. He’s like a famous athlete that kids now look up to - they never saw the early years where he practiced and worked his way to the top. Like anything in life, true success tends to be slow and steady and it is hard to pinpoint the exact moment it occurred. Bit by bit, people recognize the name, the positive reviews compile, and eventually it all comes together.
I had previously read an article that discussed Alan Jackson’s thoughts on his latest song, The Older I Get and how he wanted to shed a more positive light on getting older:
This song reflects a lot of how I feel these days," Jackson says in a statement. "It's a good song. I really liked it, but the message was a little different when I first heard it. I thought maybe it could be a little more positive about being older and wiser and more content, so they rewrote a few things, and this is how it ended up.
Written by Adam Wright, Hailey Whitters, and Sarah Allison Turner, it’s a song that puts life into perspective for us all. There are drops of wisdom throughout that reminds us how it’s family that will mean the most as time passes, not all of the surface level relationships or material items. The realizations of when to take a stand on things that matter and when to back down. It’s all part of growing up and realizing what is truly important in life.
Keep all of this in mind when you watch the official music video for this song, because it will hit you hard. For someone that has followed so much of Jackson’s career, I felt such a connection to this song. I have gone from being a little shrimp of barely 10 years old, to now being in my mid 20’s and it’s crazy to look back at all AJ has accomplished in that time. While I was going through school, working my first jobs, and now out in full time gigs, Alan has risen to be one of the country music greats. All of the personal touches in the video of his family, memorable moments, and past music videos are so powerful when put together.
Alan is one of the best there is in country music, and it’s amazing to step back and watch what he has accomplished. The lessons here in The Older I Get are ones to keep close by as our society has vastly different ideals in this day and age.
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
