With the end of 2017 rapidly approaching, it will soon be time to turn the discussion to the rear-view mirror and take a look back at all this year had to offer. However, some artists have still grabbed my attention and being the top dog here at Pitstop for Country, I can certainly make room as I so choose. Mr. Nate Coon (the drummer for Aaron Watson and performer on many studio recordings) shared a song a few weeks back that is a real ear catcher. It’s light, nothing particularly heavy, but it’s a fun, high energy track that had me singing along right away. The Cody Wayne Band’s Addicted is sure to be a song that brings some new fans on board to this high octane group.
While we are always looking at the next “big band” to take over the Texas scene, sometimes it’s easy for all the up coming acts to get lost in the shuffle. I could easily just write articles, film, or talk about the big established bands out there. But honestly, where’s the fun in that? How is that different than most other websites in the already crowed musical interwebs? It’s the same old same old, over and over again, and I love getting in on the ground floor with many of these artists. Much like myself, it’s a constant game of trying to find what works to be successful.
When I listen to new music, it’s always an exciting experience and in a lot of ways, it’s just like watching a movie for the first time. And my reaction can vary based on what I am doing at that specific point in time. With Pitstop as a side hustle, much of my day is spent at work and then hitting the gym afterwards. This means I’m firing up new music constantly in the gym and mixing it amongst proven favorites. When I remembered Nate Coon’s video for Addicted, I new it would be a song that I could add to my workout motivation soundtrack.
While high energy can bring various thoughts to mind, The Cody Wayne Band flirts with the rock side of things but also incorporates steel guitar, pedal steel and fiddle. It’s a style that is found quite often in Texas country, a scene which is known for a little of this, and a little of that. For those of us that need that extra boost, a love song like Addicted is the ticket. It’s not deep, it isn’t a songwriter’s dream, but rather guaranteed crowd favorite when the band steps on the stage. The same can be said for their earlier release, Fly High, with it’s high energy Texas twang.
Do I want every song from these guys to be like these? No, but they provide that initial hook that get people bobbing their head, or dancing and singing at the concert. From everything I can tell, they have worked to refine their sound and have put in the studio time to ensure their music is recorded at a high level. In this day and age, it’s harder to expect people to listen to a primitive lack-luster recording and be shared on social media - let alone have it chart well. With the low cost of entry of outlets like Spotify, accessible music is great, but it also has to offer something to the consumer. For me, The Cody Wayne Band hit their mark and here we are.
Take a look at Nate’s video in the studio and also their music video for Flying High which will certainly make you chuckle a bit. I’m looking forward to a full album or EP from these guys and hope to revisit them in the near future after a full listen. Keep your eyes on these guys!
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
