If you’re looking for a gal to bring back that classic country sound, look no further than Tommy Ash. I came across her music through some social media posts and was instantly drawn to her music.
Fans of Texas Country will likely hear the insane similarities of her voice to Bri Bagwell. If you’re a fan of Nashville country, look up Bri and you’ll fall in love with her singing as well.
Tommy has an incredible album with her 2013 release, “Sinner's Blood.” The Phoenix, Arizona native has relocated to Nashville, Tennessee and has brought her modernized classic sound with her. I noticed some familiar names commenting and interacting with her on social media, so you can certainly see that she has respect from some of my favorite Texas artists. Reading on her website you’ll see the impressive list of artists she has opened for such as: Dale Watson, Lorrie Morgan, Turnpike Troubadours, Billy Bob Thornton, Chris Young, Pam Tillis, Tracy Lawrence, Neal McCoy, John Micheal Montgomery, and Ryan Bingham. Impressive, huh?
Despite this album being four years old, you’ll hear her frustration at the bro-country trend in her song “Cowboys Gone.” It’s a rockin’ country tune where she sings about the “pretty boy” scene in country music. She comments on the amount of jewelry and the lack of real country music on the music airwaves. It’s awesome to here a female make a song like this as it is usually put out by men.
I loved the rockabilly sound of “Use Me” which will take many traditional country fans down memory lane. The classic riffs blaring through your speakers will have have you rocking out to this song. Her personality shines through on this track and is easily one of my favorites. Her respect for the classic country sound is so refreshing and is certainly something I picked up right away while listening to her music.
You’ll here this again on “ Living Again” and all I can think about is the similarities of Bagwell in this tune. I think they should do a duet after hearing this song and swap some lyrics. It would be an incredible opportunity to gain some new fans for each. Give a listen to this album below and enlighten yourself on yet another strong country woman that knows how to rock but loves the sound of a tele, pedal steel and the classic country sound. Tommy Ash is one to watch and I seriously hope she gains more attention. With her voice and her sound, she’s going places.
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
