It should come to no surprise that the blonde bombshell, Sunny Sweeney, released one of the best country music albums of 2017 with, Trophy. Throughout her music career, Sweeney has seen national mainstream radio play with songs like, From a Table Away but has since returned to her roots in the Texas Scene to pursue her own style of country music. She is no stranger to putting personal experiences into her music and held nothing back for one of the most special tracks she has ever released. It’s personal, it’s raw, and it’s a song that will continue to resonate with people who have experienced the struggles of not being able to have a baby. With Bottle By My Bed, Sunny has created a music video that feels so real and you can’t help but feel the pain in her voice as she and her husband are on your screen.
As a male in my 20’s, this is not a subject that I can speak with an immense amount of knowledge. However, the beauty of this song is that you don’t have to necessarily have to be trying to have child. It rather the awareness and struggle that so many face and feel they can’t talk about it. That to me is the realness of this song. All of the imagery that Sunny depicts in lyric and video is so moving.
Aside from the flawless traditional instrumentation, Sweeney shows her pain with mentions of how people think her life is so glamorous with limo rides and the touring. Little do they realize, that she would give it all up if she could have a baby on the way.
They must think because I’ve waited that I don’t want the same / Their days are changing diapers, they think mine are so exciting. Running off to where the lights are so much brighter / It’s an empty room at the top of the stairs / Watching the evening news with a couple of beers / I only call my husband babe because I love the word / Never wanted something so bad that it hurts / Even give up these damned old cigarettes / If I could have a bottle by my bed.
Having seen Sunny perform this song live only adds to the intimate feeling this song produces. She takes the time to explain the song a little bit before performing and you know at nearly every show, there is some couple that is dealing with this very issue. We all know that not everyone wants children, but for many, including myself someday, having children is a monumental part of life. It’s instilling values and caring for another being, and you work hard to give your child a chance in the world. And when you hear Bottle By My Bed and watch this music video, you realize how we all take it for granted. Touching on an issue that is so personal as this, only reaffirms why Sunny Sweeney is at the top of her game in country music and is a force to be reckoned with.
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
