Wade Bowen has been sharing his love of music by opening up his writing room to us on Wednesdays and this week he chose to debut an acoustic performance of his latest tune. The beauty of these weekly videos is the candid approach he takes when sharing music that he simply enjoys or has pulled influence from. Some of the tunes he selects are not country, which shows the casual viewer just how much of an impact the musical greats can have on a songwriter - not just their favorite country legends. Slotted for his new album in February of 2018, this new single Acuna is Bowen’s glory days tune where he reminisces about his college era trips to Mexico.
In true Wade Bowen fashion, he brings his ability to tell a story all while surrounded by catchy melodies and beats. It’s the story telling style that seems to have been left behind by so many artist in recent years much to my disappointment. Bowen is no stranger to this and hearing Acuna made me immediately think of a favorite of mine, Watch Her Drive off his 2014 self-titled album. He is a master at creating enough imagery to make us slip out of the present and into his music fantasies. That to me is the measure of a great artist and one that will go down in the books.
In the latest single, Acuna, we are taken back to the college journeys down the Frio river where Bowen and his friends would ultimately wind up in Mexico. Filled with fond reflection and healthy doses of organ, classic rock guitar riffs, and harmonica, it’s a song that makes you think about your own young adult memories. From the times of being on top of the world, young love, to the harsh realities of being a green young adult, we can all relate to this song. Reflecting on my own college years, it’s insane how fast they went by and here I am four years later from graduation.
I noticed Wade said how this new album will be a different sound than those he has previously released, so I am certainly interested in what that will be. I, like so many, have come expect a higher level sound from Bowen and I’m sure that this album will be no different. Years ago, artists like Bowen were the emerging stars and now they sit atop the Texas scene - as mentors and veterans who have established themselves as the top talent.
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
