High energy and a Texas southern drawl that fits right in with some of the legendary names in country music. I’m talking about Zac Stokes, an artist that I started listening to last month when I saw his name on social media band poster. Often featuring pumped up twangy electric guitar riffs and his scruffy deep voice, Stokes hasn’t just set out to act the part, he is the real deal. Despite being only in his 20’s, he sounds like a seasoned veteran, and will no doubt be in time.
Satisfying my honky tonk itch is his good time song, Woman Like You which features everything needed to burn the joint down. The opening guitar licks set the tone earlier letting everyone know that this one is a sure-fire sing-a-long.
This big ole country boy sure know his way around the toolbox and can fix damn near anything, except his awkwardness around a pretty woman. Stuttering and accidentally looking like a fool - all because he’s captivated by this one woman. She must be one heck of a catch if that’s the case. Certainly Woman Like You is the type of song couples enjoy together because of the male vulnerability that is often downplayed. Everyone’s a tough-guy until the meet the right one. Even if you have those big arms the size of redwoods, you’ll get flustered when you least expect it.
Stokes voice goes from pretty subdued to hitting some serious power as he hits the chorus. He has the commanding type of voice that could have suited him on the rock side of things. Luckily for us, he chose to use it to help wake things up over here in the red dirt and lay down some rock edge on the ‘ole 3/4’s time. Working in unison with the guitar’s slick country riffs, the band is able to create a real boot stompin’ energy that showcases their sound. While certainly fun, I can’t help but notice the maturity in his voice and believe he’ll continue to establish his name as his popularity grows.
Stay tuned, I really hope Zac Stokes keeps gaining momentum because seriously…how do you not love his voice?
Just a Massachusetts guy supporting Texas and other independent country/Americana artists.
