While southern rock fans have continued to hang on tightly to their favorite Allman Brothers and Skynyrd records, deep in the heart of Texas there has been a resurgence of the addictive power chords and sounds of yore. Southern rock has had its fair share of struggles as time has passed, and there are been some big shoes left to fill. A few bands like Whiskey Myers and Blackberry Smoke have risen to the occasion and helped bring a renewed vigor to the genre. This past winter I heard a band I was unfamiliar with that fit this very mold and grabbed my attention. Full of high energy rock with some much welcomed touches of brass, The Drugstore Gypsies are charging full steam ahead with their latest single, Breakin’ The Law.
Be prepared. Once you hear a song like Breakin’ The Law off The Drugstore Gypsies self titled album, it will be stuck in your head for the next week straight. The powerful opening guitar riffs are immediately joined by a section of brass horns which signals that these guys are more than just some power chord rockers. Lead singer Duke Ryan’s voice was made for this rock n’ roll music and the southern drawl only adds to the depth of their sound.
These guys are road warriors through and through and they sing about that in songs like this. Their music makes for a damn good time and Breakin’ The Law is no exception to that. It’s the sexed-up party fun these guys experience while they are out touring. Just the band name alone tells you these guys are all about living on the open road and bringing their music to everyone that will listen. They aren’t there to croon, they’re goal is to crank it up to 11 every single night and tear the venue down.
Don’t believe me? Watch their music video for Breakin’ The Law and see for yourself.
